Well, ONE of the most wonderful times of the year, certainly. . . the seed catalogs have started arriving!!!
I always know it’s coming, but still I’m always kind of surprised by how EXCITED it still makes me. Burpee, Territorial Seed Company, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, and a new one this year–D. Landreth Seed Company. Does it get any more exciting than this?? It’s like I can just feel all the possibilities. . . new varieties of carrots, beans, beets. . . maybe I’ll try lettuce this year. And of course, I know I’ve got some sweet potatoes to decide on!
And this D. Landreth Seed Company has a lot to choose from. . . I actually got it from a friend (thanks, Wilbur!) who refers to the shiny, new seed catalogs as “garden porn.” And I think I know just how he feels. This catalog has pages and pages and pages of all sorts of different kinds of vegetables and herbs. . . a section dedicated to good choices for children’s gardens, a gorgeous 20-or-so-page insert of full-color photographs, and even a section called “The African American Heritage Collection.” And it also has lots of articles pulled from the catalogs from years back–one, taken from the 1903 catalog, is called “Vagaries in Gardening.” Indeed. That could probably be the title of my autobiography.
So I’m going to pore through them all and, no doubt, make a ridiculously long and unlikely list. Then I’ll comb through that list and pare it down, little by little. And I’ll be asking you along the way for suggestions–if you have particular carrots that have always produced well for you, if there’s a certain bean that you think is extraordinary–I’ll take any suggestions.
But in the mean time, I think this D. Landreth catalog is going to be good for many hours of enjoyable perusing. I can’t wait to get started!
