Over the Thanksgiving weekend I actually was able to cut and use some fresh herbs from our vegetable garden–but I’m thinking they may be the last.
I had to really dig down to the bottom of the oregano plant to get green oregano, and I pretty much used up what I could find. The basil has been done, of course, for weeks. The lemon thyme is looking pretty frozen and the regular thyme has simply been cut down to the ground and used up.
I can cut what rosemary we have left, but I’m thinking I should probably get around to it pretty soon.
I am really going to miss being able to cook with fresh herbs. Not that we can’t buy them in the produce section at the grocery, but boy, that gets expensive. Plus they don’t tend to last long enough for me to use them up so I feel like I end up wasting a fair amount of them.
It’s SO nice to just be able to go out to the garden and cut what I need, when I need it.
I’m on the lookout for potted herbs I could try to overwinter in my kitchen, but so far I haven’t found any.
It’s shaping up to be a long winter. . . .
